Artificial Sweeteners

951 Aspartame
May provoke a variety of health effects from headaches, blurred vision, seizure, numbness, insomnia, memory loss, eye problems, hyperactivity, rashes, ear ringing, slurred speech.

952 Sodium and Calcium Cyclamate
Causes bladder cancer and testicular atrophy in rats.

954 Saccharin
Causes bladder cancer in rats.

950 Acesulphame K
Can stimulate insulin and aggravate hypoglycaemia.

955 Sucralose
Causes thymus glands to shrink in animal tests.

Preservatives

Sulphites

Can trigger asthma attacks, stomach problems, blurred
Vision, dizziness, irregular breathing. Treatment with
Sulphite reduces a food's vitamin B1 or thiamine content.
220 sulpher dioxide
221 sodium sulphite
222 sodium bisulphite
223 sodium metabisulphite
224 potassium metabisulphite
225 calcium bisulphite

Nitrates
Can cause nitrate poisoning. Nitrates reduce the ability to
carry oxygen around the body. Infants are most at risk of
the toxic effects of nitrates. Nitrates can combine with amines in the stomach to form cancer-causing nitrosamines.
249 potassium nitrate
250 sodium nitrate
251 sodium nitrate
252 potassium nitrate

Benzoates
Can provoke allergies, asthma, skin reactions, hyperactivity gastric irritation, migraines. When combines with 222 or tartrazine may cause even more severe problems for Asthmatics and hyperactive children.
210 benzoic acid
211 sodium benzoate


Antioxidants

320 Butylated hydroxyanisole
Can trigger hyperactivity and asthma, raise blood
cholesterol levels. Linked to cancer in test animals.

321 Butylated hydroxytoluene
Can trigger hyperactivity and asthma, raise blood
cholesterol levels and cause liver and kidney damage.


Flavour Enhancers

621 Monosodium glutamate
Can cause heart palpitations, headaches, dizziness,
muscle tightening, nausea, numbness, tingling in the
arms, face, etc. Can trigger asthma.


Miscellaneous

925 Chlorine
Forms highly toxic organochlorine byproducts when combined with organic matter. Some byproducts like chloroform are carcinogenic. In animal studies chlorine has been linked to bladder cancer, birth defects, changes in fat metabolism and risk of cardiovascular disease.

926 Chlorine dioxide
A powerful irritant which is dangerous to inhale. It can
corrode the skin and mucous membranes. It destroys the
vitamin E in foods.

Caffeine
Heavy caffeine consumers may develop stomach disorders, heart palpitations, anxiety, insomnia. It increases the production of stomach acid, alters the metabolism of fat, temporarily raises blood pressure, can cause insulin to be released, can cause heartburn and stomach upsets. MayTrigger migraines and benign breast tumours.


Colours

102 Tartrazine
Provokes asthma, rashes, hyperactivity in sensitive people. Could adversely affect digestive enzymes.

110 Sunset Yellow
Provokes asthma, rashes, hyperactivity. Affects kidneys of rats. Could adversely affect digestive enzymes.

123 Amaranth
Provokes asthma, rashes, hyperactivity in sensitive people. Caused cancer and gene damage in some laboratory tests. Could adversely affect digestive enzymes.

124 Ponceau 4R
Provokes asthma, rashes, hyperactivity in sensitive people. Caused cancer and gene damage in some laboratory tests. Could adversely affect digestive enzymes.

127 Erythrosine
May provoke asthma, rashes, hyperactivity in sensitive people. Caused thyroid damage and cancer in rats.

129 Allura Red Ac
Provokes rashes in sensitive people.

132 Indigo Carmine
May provoke asthma, rashes, hyperactivity. Caused cancer gene damage in some laboratory tests.

133 Brilliant Blue
Provokes rashes in sensitive people. Caused kidney tumours in animal tests.

142 Green S
May provoke asthma, rashes and hyperactivity.

150a Caramels
Some Caramels reduce white blood cells in rats.
150b May reduce vitamin B6

151 Black PN
Provokes asthma, rashes and hyperactivity. Could adversely affect digestive enzymes.

155 Brown HT
Provokes asthma, rashes and hypersensitivity in sensitive people.
