Body Corporate Wellness News June 2004
Positive Prevention |
Hi,
This month we’re are focusing on Corporate Wellness Programmes
– what they are and why you should have one. We will also
take a look at some tips that will interest us all – Anti-aging!
We are also having a Mid-Winter Supplement sale.
The Corporate Wellness Challenge
Wellness
is having the health, energy, enthusiasm and stress management
tools to not only cope with the challenges, but to embrace them.
Do you want to save your business money?
Losing
a staff member costs your business. For an employee earning $30,000
a year, the tangible and intangible cost of losing them is 2-3
times their wage. For employees earning $50,000, this is close
to 4-6 times their salary, while it is up to 9 times for employees
earning $150,000 plus.
Having sick or unhealthy staff can cost a business up to 16% of
your payroll each year, so taking action to manage these costs
is an important business issue.
If you are responsible for the Management of a team, or if you
are a team member, you have probably heard how Wellness Programmes
assist in reducing staff turnover, sick leave, stress and fatigue,
while increasing individual happiness and team effectiveness.
Wellness Programmes provide the tools for individuals to optimise
or restore their health and wellbeing. They have typically combined
seminars focusing on health and wellbeing, along with health assessments
and one-on-one advice. These modules provide each person with
an understanding of what their individual risk factors are, and
how they can be managed. Team members also gain an understanding
of how they can take responsibility for their own wellbeing, along
with that of their family and friends.
Our
Wellness Programmes are evolving further to fit with both business
and the individual’s needs more closely and involve a broader
range of services and options – particularly for those companies
who have had a programme established for a number of years or
are looking for something different. Many businesses are looking
for new initiatives that will spark the interest and ongoing support
of employees (and Senior Management) and create a climate of wellness.
A Wellness Programme needs to address the key issues affecting
your employees both at work and outside of the workplace so they
want to get involved. When combined with work-life balance and
family friendly policies, this will position your organisation
as an employer of choice.
Do
you know what issues are affecting your team?
By
conducting an Organisational Wellness Survey to identify stressors
affecting staff you can develop a programme that reflects the
needs of your organisation and employees. The survey feedback
report provides you with advice on company strategies and wellness
initiatives and how to develop a cost effective programme that
will work for your organisation.
How
can you get the best outcome from your Wellness Programme?
The
key is to maximise employee participation. Research has proven
that onsite wellness initiatives are most effective; especially
where individual employees have an opportunity to select options
that they feel will suit their lifestyle and their needs.
Regular scheduling of wellness modules increases awareness and
participation in the programme. For this reason, The Body Corporate
Ltd develops a Wellness Calendar for your business, with events
planned throughout the year to make it easier for you to manage
and get the best results.
To assist with multiple site operations, remote locations, a large
workforce, or purely for convenience, many companies are seeking
alternatives such as online and self-paced learning modules. Combined
with other wellness or work-life balance initiatives, these can
be a fantastic way of making the programme accessible to all employees
and provide a broader range of options.
How
do you measure the return on your investment?
To
review a programme’s effectiveness, regular reporting and
feedback on employee health statistics, linked with other organisational
measures is essential. The Body Corporate Ltd provides quarterly
feedback reports throughout the course of a Wellness Programme.
It is important to note that personal information is not passed
on, only generic information, providing an overview of the organisation.
If you do want to make a difference and get your team fired up,
what better way to get your teams going than kick-starting a “Corporate
Wellness Challenge”.
Whether you want to be an employer of choice, are looking at addressing
staffing issues or improving productivity, by developing a culture
of wellness your business will have a competitive advantage. If
you would like to know more about how The Body Corporate Ltd can
assist, please contact Karen
Beard 09 361 3964 or 021 471 386; or Karen Moffatt 09 361 3964

Anti-aging tips
12 Anti-Aging Super-foods
by Maria Deveson Crabbe
Nutrition Author and CEO Aussie Bodies
- Salmon.
An excellent source of omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids
hard to get in the diet with lean protein for improved
cell turnover and blood glucose balance.
-
Flaxseed oil. A convenient
source of anti-inflammatory ALA, an omega 3 essential
fatty acid, and makes a great salad dressing. Fish oil
is another elixir of life with its GLA (omega 6 essential
fatty acid), along with omega 3s.
-
Whey protein. Find a great
protein powder that contains whey protein concentrate,
which is rich in the amino acids that help your body make
glutathione, your first antioxidant line of defence.
-
Blueberries. Practically
medicinal with their high antioxidant status. Berries
are very rich sources of antioxidants.
-
Broccoli. All cruciferous
vegetables are high in antioxidants, including also cauliflower
and brussel sprouts.
-
Spinach. All leafy greens
are high in antioxidants like carotenes and vitamin E,
but spinach comes bundled with the most goodies including
higher levels of iron, folate and other protective phyto-chemicals.
-
Oatmeal. Oats are among
the few friendly carbs you can have at breakfast, promoting
steady blood glucose. It also contains vitamin E and beta
glucan, another antioxidant.
-
Eggs. Don't shy away from
eggs! They contain omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids
(about 50mg and 500mg respectively). The new omega 3-boosted
eggs on the market contain around 200mg and 800mg. Antioxidants
lutein, selenium and vitamin A are also in eggs plus folate
and iron.
-
Walnuts. Almonds, pecans
and cashews are great too, but walnuts contain the most
omega 3s of all nuts and are among the most antioxidant-rich.
-
Yoghurt. Digestive health normally declines with
age, but the friendly bacteria in yoghurt will help promote
gut integrity and improve nutrient uptake. They will also
help make B vitamins, vitamins A and K.
-
Green tea. High in polyphenols, green tea continues
to impress in scientific circles for its potent antioxidant
and anti-inflammatory properties.
-
Chocolate. Just threw this one in to sex things
up! But seriously, dark chocolate has been shown to have
strong antioxidant properties. Lindt is rumoured among
the experts to be the best for antioxidant-rich cocoa.
But be warned: milk may inhibit the absorption of the
antioxidants, so choose a dairy free one, and one low
in sugars!
|
Add a handful of the super-foods listed above to your shopping
list. Swap them for some of your current food choices. But above
all maintain a healthy balance of protein and carbohydrates in
your diet, keeping sugar to a minimum. Be lured by nature's eye-catching
variety of colourful fruits and vegetables and maintain an ample
water intake each day. This is important for keeping the cells
well hydrated, improving organ function and ensuring smooth, supple
skin. Invest in a good protein powder, preferably with whey protein
concentrate, and have a good vitamin and herbal antioxidant supplement
on hand for those times you are not getting enough variety in
your diet. Go to the Exercise
& Sport section in our wellness shop for more information
on protein powders and supplements that we recommend. Let your
hair down and keep enjoying all the foods you love. Nothing happens
overnight in the anti-ageing stakes, although I'll let you in
on a little tip: many women experience improved skin quality within
six weeks of incorporating flaxseed and whey protein in the diet.
As
for stress, sleep and sun protection, we will address these in
future newsletters.
